Patchouli is both loved and hated, but here in our home, we like it very much. Wikipedia says the following about Patchouli:
“The scent of patchouli is heavy and powerful. It has been used in perfumes for centuries.
Patchouli oil and incense experienced a tremendous surge in popularity during the 1960s and 1970s, particularly among followers of free love and the hippie lifestyle, as it helped mask the smell of marijuana. The Hare Krishna movement may have contributed to this popularity, as the god Krishna is said to reside in patchouli. It can also be used as a hair conditioner for dreadlocks.”

We also read:
“Despite its frequent association with alternative lifestyles, patchouli has also found widespread use in modern industry. It is a component in approximately one-third of the top notes of perfumes, including more than half of all men’s fragrances. Patchouli is also an important ingredient in East Asian incense. It is used as a fragrance in products such as paper towels, laundry detergents and air fresheners.
The essential oil is produced by steam distillation of the plant’s dried leaves. Producing 1 kg of patchouli oil requires 30–50 kg of dried leaves.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, silk traders from China travelling to the Middle East filled their silk fabrics with dried patchouli leaves to prevent moths from laying their eggs in the fabric. Many historians speculate that this association with expensive Oriental goods is what led many Europeans of that era to regard patchouli as a luxurious fragrance. This perception has continued into modern perfumery.
Traditional herbalists claim that the plant and its oil have a range of health-promoting properties, and its scent is believed to have a relaxing effect.”

Patchouli essential oil has a long history and is certainly not an unknown fragrance. If you are curious about this scent, you will find it in Men’s Soap.

Men’s Soap has been enriched with four essential oils: Patchouli, Frankincense, Cedarwood and Lavender.
